As the people prepare for war, noble families whisper among themselves that it's time for new leaders to take power, time to rebuild Cadmea! Restoring the birthplace of Dionysus, the god of wine, to its former glory will be no easy task, especially when the enemy is knocking at its gates.
In Thebai, players take on the roles of influential leaders from noble families during the tumultuous late Bronze Age. Throughout the game, players must rebuild the Cadmea, the citadel of Thebes, while restoring the city's exports, praying to the city's gods, and protecting the lives of its citizens as great heroes fight to the death at its gates.
The game is played over 10 rounds, each divided into an action phase and a fate phase. During the action phase, players use a Citizen die and then move their Archon onto the Cadmea. During the fate phase, players can earn bonus points based on their accomplishments and the strength of their defenses against the city gates. After the final scoring, the player with the most victory points wins the game.
